Obituary:
Mr. Earl Smith passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at his home in DeKalb. He was 67.

Earl was born May 3, 1942 in Avery, Texas to Claude Lester Smith and Myrtle Maebell Nix Smith. On March 11, 1967, he married Norma Orr at the De Kalb Church of Christ. Earl was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 31 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ, the Army Reserve, and the American Paint Horse Association. Earl was an officer and member of the De Kalb Riding Club and a founding member of Four States High School Rodeo Association.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Norma Smith; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Zane Olson of De Kalb, Texas and Sandi and Matt Crawford of De Kalb, Texas; two sisters, Norma Murphy and Claudene Bohlar; two brothers, Magel Smith and Larry Smith; three grandchildren, Shelby Olson, Ty Olson, and Matti Crawford; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Mangus Smith, and a sister and brother-in-law, Nonette and Royce Hammett.

Visitation will be 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Friday, October 23, 2009 at Bates Family Funeral Home.

Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Western Sports Arena in De Kalb, Texas. Interment will follow at Pine Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Springs Cemetery.
